History of DIET:

District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Uthamacholapuram, Salem established in 26.03.1999(GO no 41) it is a functional unit of SCERT. The DIET acts as a district level apex organization for designing and executing training programmes, revising curriculum and syllabus. The DIET which was functioning from the old building of GHSS, Jari Kondalampatti, Salem and it shifted to its own spacious new building near national highway, Utrhamacholapuram, Salem 636010, in the first week of August, 2000. This District level institute is the academic authority for the implementation of RTE act within the district. It promotes co-ordination and linkages amongst various institutes involved in Teacher Education and Training. DIET is concerned with the academic aspects of school education including formulation of curriculum, preparation of textbooks, teachers' handbooks, module and teacher training. The academic activities and programmes of DIET are carried out by the various departments / units. DIET plans and co-ordinates all academic projects and programmes in the district. DIET has a built-in area of about 9000 square feet set in a one six acre plot, has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.3 crores. It has administrative building with classrooms and 30 rooms in Guest House for gents and ladies separate so that the teachers and teacher educators attending various programmes in DIET can stay comfortably and the staff quarters are also available.


Vision:

The vision of the DIET is to equip pre-service student teachers of this institution with specified knowledge, skills and values to enable them to become good human beings and productive, socially responsible citizens and to achieve excellence in whatever they do. And it committed to strive for training to bring about qualitative improvement in Primay School Education by means of inclusion of ICT and to enlighten the teachers and make them aware of the modern trends in the field of Primary education, to provide the teachers with the convenience of a study centre and it renders in-service training from primary to higher secondary level teachers through many subject experts.


Mission and objectives :


  • To provide academic leadership in school education as well as improving the quality of education provided in elementary and secondary schools in the district.
  • To achieve qualitative improvement in school education through pre-service teacher education and inservice teacher education and to act as a nodal agency in providing in-service teacher education for elementary & secondary school teachers.
  • To develop training manuals for all teacher development programmes organized by SCERT, SSA, DEE, RMSA & DSE, and to implement and monitor various training programmes at State, District, Block and CRC levels.
  • To create network with State Education Department, Universities and Non-Governmental Organizations to introduce new ideas into education network and to undertake various projects to promote continuous teacher professional development.
  • To prepare teachers hand books, resource books and other materials for use of students and teachers.
  • To coordinate, at the state level, schemes of various state, central and international agencies – NCERT, NUEPA, UNICEF, SSA, RMSA, RIE, etc.,
  • To support DIET and other faculty in conducting educational research and promote educational research and offer training in educational research methodology.
  • To design specific strategies for inclusive education to address issues of children with special needs, employability of such children and graduates.
  • To undertake various educational projects in collaboration with various agencies and NGOs working in the education sector.

Functions :

(1) Training and orientation of the following target groups:-

Elementary school teachers (both pre-service and in-service education).
Head Master, Heads of School Complexes and officers of Education Department up to Block level.
Instructors and supervisors of Non-formal and Adult Education (induction level and continuing education)
Members of SMC, SMDC and Village Education Committee (VECs) Community leaders, youth and other volunteers who wish to work as educational activities.
Resource persons who will conduct suitable programmes for the target groups mentioned at (I) and (iii) above, at centers other than the DIET .

(2) Academic and resource support to the elementary and adult education systems in the district in other ways e.g. by

extension activities and interaction with the field,
provision of services of a resource and learning center for teachers and instructors,
development of locally relevant materials teaching aids, evaluation tools etc., and
serving as an evaluation center for elementary school and programmes of NFE/AE.

(3) Research, Action research and experimentation to deal with specific problems of the district in achieving the objectives in the areas of elementary and adult education.

Teacher education programme offered :


Curriculum & Syllabus of D.El.Ed course in Tamil Nadu

In the light of NCF 2005, the Government of Tamil Nadu revised the curriculum and syllabus of teacher Education in 2008. Duration of the course is two academic years with 220 working days, each with 1100 hours in a year.

Projects

The trainees undertake observation and teaching practice in primary schools. They do various assignments under the guidance of the faculty members of teacher education institutions. They go on Field trips organized by the institutes to have experiential learning.

2.12.3) Internal Assessment:

Internal Assessment is done each year for Taught Courses, Practicum and Teaching Practice with weightage of Marks 175, 625 and 60 respectively.

Panel of Examiners for Internal Examination is prepared at SCERT.

The trainees are engaged in teaching practice in primary schools which is supervised by guide teachers and faculty members of teacher education institution. The trainees are assigned grades as given below.

2.12.4) External Examination: 

External Examination is conducted every year. The Directorate of Government Examination conducts the External Examination. Each theory paper carries 100 marks and 25 marks internal. The successful candidates who score a minimum of 50% in each paper are awarded with Diploma certificates.

SCERT develops the Annual academic calendar for D. El. Ed course as per the NCTE norms. The calendar is prepared in consultation with SCERT academic faculty, Principals and senior faculty of DIETs and representatives of private TTIs.
